Electric moka pot, nice and easy

Fill to the valve, level the coffee, switch on, and stop it when it sputters.

⏱️ 10 minEasy

Starting recipe

About 15 g coffee (a full, level basket) + about 150 g water filled to just below the valve, brewed in 2–5 minutes.

Grind: Fine-ish, a bit coarser than espresso

You need

  • About 15 g fresh coffee, ground fine-ish (a bit coarser than espresso)
  • An electric moka pot with its base
  • Fresh water
  • A towel
  • Optional: a kitchen scale

Step by step

  1. Fill the boiler

Fill the bottom chamber with fresh water up to just below the safety valve, about 150 g for a 3-cup pot. Never fill above the valve.

  2. Fill the basket, don't tamp

Fill the funnel basket with ground coffee, slightly heaped, and level it with a finger. Don't press it down.

  3. Assemble

Wipe loose grounds off the rim, drop the basket in, and screw the top on firmly. Set the pot on its base and make sure it sits straight.

  4. Switch on

Turn it on with the lid open so you can watch. Coffee usually starts rising within a few minutes.

  5. Stop at the sputter

When the stream turns pale and starts gurgling, switch off and lift the pot off its base, even if it would shut off by itself later. That keeps the bitter last part out.

The pot and base are hot. Use the handle and a towel.

  6. Stir and serve

Stir the coffee in the top chamber, then pour.

  7. Clean when cool

Unplug it, let it cool fully before opening, and rinse the parts with warm water. Never put the electric base in water.

Common mistakes

  • Tamping the coffee.
  • Filling above the safety valve.
  • Letting it run until it shuts off, so the end of the brew turns bitter.
  • Opening the pot while it's still hot and pressurized.
  • Getting the electric base wet.

Tastes off? Fix it

If it…Try this
Sour or thinGrind a little finer.
Bitter or burntGrind a little coarser, and switch off as soon as it starts to sputter.
WeakUse more coffee: fill the basket fully and level it.
Too strongKeep the basket full and add a splash of hot water to your cup.
Nothing comes out, or the valve hissesSwitch off, unplug and let it cool fully. The grind was too fine or packed: grind coarser and don't tamp.

Words you'll hear

Boiler
The bottom chamber you fill with water. It has a safety valve on the side.
Safety valve
A small brass valve on the boiler that releases pressure if something blocks the flow. Never fill above it or cover it.
Funnel basket
The metal basket that holds the ground coffee and sits in the boiler.
Collector
The top chamber where the finished coffee rises and collects.
Sputtering
The gurgling, spitting sound near the end when steam starts pushing through. Your cue to take it off the heat.
Ratio
Water weight divided by coffee weight. A typical moka basket and boiler land near 1:10, for example 15 g coffee to 150 g water.
Extraction
How much flavor the water pulls from the grounds. Under-extracted tastes sour and thin; over-extracted tastes bitter and burnt.
